Piriformis syndrome while pregnant…?

Has anyone else ever been diagnosed with piriformis syndrome while pregnant? If so, did treatment help – chiropractic, physical therapy, water therapy, etc???
This is my first pregnancy and I’ve had horrible sciatic nerve pain when I sit for long periods of time (over 30 min.) The chiropractor has diagnosed it as "piriformis syndrome" and I see him 3 times a week. The symtoms have not gotten better and it’s been 10 weeks already!!
I’m 7 months pregnant and it seems the bigger I get, the worse the pain gets.

Hey there,

Wow, my heart goes out to you. I have experienced the horrific experience of sciatica and I know how debilitating it can be.

I have tried all of it. It all helped relived my symptoms and I cannot pinpoint exactly what it was that finally helped. For example:

1. pain pills- somewhat helpful in the short term
2. Naproxen (which I am sure that we can’t take while pregnant
3. Chiripractor- very helpful
4. Physical therapy- which was very very helpful and gave me exercises that I still use today.
5. epidural- This really helped me too! I had two of them.

My biggest fear is that I will get another flare up.

Good luck!!!

Piriformis syndrome?

I am pretty sure I have it. My piriformis seems to cramp up while I sleep to the point where I can hardly walk. Stretching, anti-inflammatories, and heat only provide temporary relief. I am thinking chiropractic or other alternative treatment might work since I am hesitant about cortisone shots, which the orthopods and physical therapists say is the next step. Any advice?

I will provide you with an alternative solution. Most docs can not provide a real cause for piriformis. Nor can they provide a treatment that works….I experience severe piriformis pain for 3 years and did all the chiropractic, massage, nerve stimulation, heat/cold, ice, and special exercises/stretches.

Then I discovered that there is a tension induced pain syndrome…a lot of back pain, sciatica and piriformis are caused by worry, anger, resentment, striving, controlling, and other common Type A behavior traits.

The treatment for this diagnois is to STOP all physical treatments and instead turn your thoughts inward to what is going on in your life…what is causing you stress, tension and anxiety…are you a worrier or overly self-conscious or a big striver? Also do you repress your feeling/emotions?
These are common signals that you may be generating tension induced pain.

You will be glad to know that this is not just in your thoughts. When we generate inner tension our nervous system initiates a bio-chemical reaction that is called oxygen deprivation….blood vessels restrict flow when inner tension is present and this means a lack of oxgen to muscle and nerve tissue, which means pain.
